Samsung on Wednesday revealed the Pro Endurance, a new microSD card with a version that allows cameras to record for up to 16 years. The Pro Endurance can last as long as up to 33 of Samsung's Evo Plus cards, the company said. 

The card is intended for surveillance cameras, along with cameras on doorbells and vehicle dashboards. It offers read and write speeds of 100 MB/s and 30-40 MB/s.

"From CCTV to doorbell cameras, the need for long-lasting and high-performing video surveillance solutions is continuing to increase," KyuYoung Lee, vice president of Samsung's Memory Brand Product Biz Team, said in a statement.

The Pro Endurance comes in four storage options: 32GB, 64GB, 128GB, and 256GB, the latter of which costs $55 and can achieve the 16-year benchmark. All models are built to withstand drops, X-rays, magnets and environmental factors.

Walmart is expanding its drone delivery service across six states, the retail giant said Tuesday. Walmart said the service has the potential to reach 4 million US households and deliver over 1 million packages by drone in a year.

Up to now, the drone service has only been available in parts of Arkansas. Walmart now is expanding its drone delivery network to 34 sites across six states by the end of the year. In addition to Arkansas, customers in those locations in Arizona, Florida, Texas, Utah and Virginia will be able to order packages delivered by drone to their homes.

Drone delivery will be available between the hours of 8 a.m. and 8 p.m. for a fee of $4. Walmart said customers will be able to choose from tens of thousands of items like groceries, diapers and over-the-counter medicine. Customers can order items totaling up to 10 pounds and have it delivered by drone in as little as 30 minutes. 

"If it fits safely it flies," the company said.

Other companies like UPS, Amazon and Alphabet are also working on expanding their own drone delivery initiatives. 

Google's parent company Alphabet began flying packages with Wing, its drone delivery service, to Dallas area residents in April after having previously delivered over 200,000 packages via drone in Australia, Finland and Virginia. UPS drones were flying medicine to CVS customers' homes in 2019. The same year, Amazon unveiled a newly redesigned Prime Air drone -- part of Amazon's drone delivery project that has since been hampered by a series of crashes and issues with its Prime Air unit in the UK. 

In 2020, the FAA announced a set of rules in the US addressing drone safety concern, which could help bring drone delivery services into the mainstream. 

TLC: Tables, Ladders and Chairs is the final pay-per-view of the decade, and it's a weird one. The match card isn't final, at at this stage contains no Seth Rollins, Kevin Owens or Daniel Bryan. There's no Brock Lesnar, which means no WWE Championship match. And while Bray Wyatt is wrestling The Miz, the Universal Championship is currently not on the line.

Pretty strange but that's OK, the women will save the day. Asuka and Kairi Sane will defend their Women's Tag Team Championship belts in a Tables, Ladders and Chairs match against Becky Lynch and Charlotte. Asuka, Lynch and Flair had a fantastic triple-threat TLC match at last year's event, so expect this one to be great too.

The other big bout is Roman Reigns against Baron Corbin, also in a TLC match. If I was a betting man, I'd put money on this being only OK.

TLC 2019 takes place in Minneapolis, Minnesota on Sunday, Dec. 15. The main card starts at 4 p.m. PT/7 p.m. ET. If you're a WWE Network subscriber -- at $9.99 per month, but free for one month for new subscribers -- you can watch it live for free. Otherwise you'll need to contact your local cable provider and pay a separate fee to watch. The Kickoff Show starts at 3 p.m. PT/6 p.m. ET on WWE's YouTube channel and the WWE Network.

Viewers in the UK will have to stay up late, as the show starts there at midnight Monday GMT (11 p.m. Sunday kickoff). For Australians, Survivor Series starts at 11 a.m. AEDT time (10 a.m. kickoff) on Monday.

You may soon be able to have WhatsApp group calls with up to eight people, according to a Tuesday report. The Facebook-owned chat service is reportedly rolling out the feature to devices with the latest iOS and Android beta update installed. 

Participants with the most up-to-date version of WhatsApp will be able to participate in group voice or video calls, according to WABetaInfo. To launch the feature, open a group and tap the call button. Group members who aren't saved contacts in your phone reportedly won't be added to the call.

Alternatively, you can open the calls tab in WhatsApp, tap the call button and then hit "New group call." You can then choose which contacts you'd like to call. 

WABetaInfo says WhatsApp is gradually rolling out the new feature.

Representatives from WhatsApp and parent Facebook didn't immediately respond to a request for comment. 

Mario Strikers: Battle League arrives on Nintendo Switch next Friday, but Switch Online members have a chance to try the arcade soccer game a little early.

Nintendo is hosting a "First Kick" demo for Mario Strikers: Battle League this weekend, letting players sample online multiplayer matches with friends and other, random competitors. Here's how to download the demo and what times the online multiplayer sessions will be available.

How do I download the demo?

You can download the Mario Strikers: Battle League First Kick demo for free from the Nintendo eShop. The demo features an offline training mode that explains the basics of the game, as well as options to play matches online against other players. However, the online options will be available only during specific windows of time (detailed below).

Do I need Nintendo Switch Online?

All Switch owners can play the demo's tutorial, but you will need to have a Nintendo Switch Online membership to participate in this weekend's online multiplayer sessions.

An individual subscription to the base Nintendo Switch Online service costs $20 per year, while an Expansion Pack membership costs $50 and includes additional perks, such as access to select Switch DLC and retro Nintendo 64 and Sega Genesis games.

If you don't have a paid membership, Nintendo is also offering a seven-day free trial for the service through the Nintendo eShop, letting you join this weekend's online multiplayer sessions. However, a free trial will convert into a one-month subscription once the trial period ends unless you opt out of automatic renewal before then.

When are the multiplayer sessions?

As mentioned, the Free Kick demo will offer online multiplayer sessions, but only during specific windows. You'll be able to participate in online matches against other players on the following dates and times:

DJI's latest drone -- the Air 2S -- might just be the best drone for landscape lovers. It's compact, it's lightweight, it's got surprisingly good battery life, it's packed with intelligent flight modes and its upgraded 1-inch sensor captures superb imagery. 

The Air 2S is basically an upgraded version of the Air 2 that DJI launched last year. Reviewer Josh Goldman found a lot to like about that drone, and while the 2S is physically almost identical, it's got a bigger camera sensor that promises much improved quality. 

The Air 2S is available now and costs £899 (converts to approximately $1,240 or AU$1,600) for the drone and controller, or as part of the Fly More combo which adds two extra batteries, a charging hub, a set of ND filters for the camera and a carry bag for £1,169 (about $1,610).

Here then are the biggest reasons why the Air 2S should be in every landscape photographer's kit bag.

Compact size

Physically you won't see any difference between the new Air 2S and last year's Air 2. It weighs roughly 595 grams (1.3 pounds) and has an identical footprint when folded or unfolded. It's roughly around the size of a DSLR zoom lens and in fact fits perfectly comfortably in a lens slot in my photography backpack. That makes it superb for landscape photographers, like me, who want the option of getting some great aerial images, but don't necessarily want to drag a dedicated case for a larger drone up a hillside. 

It's smaller and lighter than 2016's Mavic Pro but larger than the teeny-tiny DJI Mavic Mini, so that's still the one to consider if every single ounce is important, but the added size of the Air 2S will provide extra stability in more windy conditions. 

The controller is pretty chunky, being almost as big as the drone itself, but it's robust enough that you can chuck it in your bag without worrying about damaging it, and the spare batteries for the drone can sit in any side pocket of your bag without weighing you down. It connects to your phone (iOS or Android) using a supplied cable. 

It can fly up to 12 kilometers away from you, although I didn't test this out as my local laws don't allow it. Make sure you're always flying within the law, wherever you are.

Excellent image quality

The main upgrade in the Air 2S is in its camera. Outwardly it looks basically the same, but it's been equipped with a larger 1-inch image sensor that offers 20-megapixel still images and up to 5.4K video. I'm impressed with the overall image quality in my tests so far, with video footage being packed with detail and having excellent colors and dynamic range. The gimbal provides rock-solid stabilisation, so all of my footage looks super slick and cinematic too. 

You can shoot video at 30 frames per second at full 5.4K resolution or up to 60fps if you drop the resolution down to 4K. I found shooting in the auto mode gave me the best footage with the least effort, but you can switch to pro mode for granular control over white balance, ISO speed and shutter speeds. The more professional among you can also shoot footage in D-Log, which will allow for more control when it comes to editing color and contrast in software like Adobe Premiere or DaVinci Resolve. 

Still images look good too, particularly when taken in raw DNG format and then adjusted in Adobe Lightroom afterwards. The drone can automatically take bracketed images (multiple images taken intentionally brighter and darker) in order to merge those in post to produce an image with more detail in the extreme highlights and shadows. 

One thing it can't do is flip the camera and shoot in portrait orientation. It's a shame as this is often an angle I'd like to capture for still images. The rise in popularity of vertical videos on TikTok and Instagram Reels means no vertical shooting option on a consumer drone like this feels like a missed opportunity. 

The sensor's high resolution means the Air 2S can offer 2x and 4x digital zoom in video. The effect at 2x is pretty cool, particularly if you're circling around a point of interest as it can create the sort of telephoto effect you'd normally only get with a long lens out of a helicopter. The effect is certainly more pronounced at 4x zoom, but the image quality noticeably drops and likely wouldn't be usable for professional purposes at least. 

Good battery life

DJI promises 31 minutes of flight time from a full battery, which from my own testing isn't quite realistic. With mixed use -- ranging from simply hovering in place, through to fast fly-bys and circling a point of interest -- I found around 20-25 minutes was achievable.

That's still a good real-world amount of flight time from each battery however, and easily outpaces what I got from my much older DJI Mavic 2. With three fully charged batteries in your bag (as you'll get with the Fly More combo) you'll comfortably be able to get a full hour of air time from the drone each time you head out. 

Easy to use

The Air 2S is one of the easiest DJI drones I've flown. Setting up to fly is quick and easy, and you can comfortably be in the air in under a minute if you know what you're doing. The overall control scheme is the same as before so owners of previous DJI drones won't need to relearn how to control it, and it won't take long for newbies to master the basics. 

As with previous DJI drones -- including the Air 2 -- there are a range of automated flight modes designed to help you get better-looking footage when you're out and about. My favourite is the point of interest mode that will have the drone automatically circle around you -- or someone else -- just by tapping on them on your phone's screen. And thanks to the sensors on all sides of the drone, it won't crash into anything while it's following you.

The auto modes are particularly handy if you're trying to get footage of yourself while you're out solo, or maybe you're mountain biking with friends and want the drone to simply follow you down the trails without any of you having to control it. Budding YouTubers who frequently shoot outside in nature should definitely consider whether a drone like the Air 2S could add a new element of production to their videos.

DJI has also added a new mode called MasterShots which will apparently automatically record video along a set flight route, and then edit the video together for you, along with a soundtrack. I haven't tested this yet and while it sounds like a fun addition for absolute beginners, I suspect that the majority of people wanting the Air 2S's image quality will be wanting to do their own edits back at home. 

So maybe the DJI Air 2S doesn't offer the sort of commercial-level image quality you'd get on bigger setups like the Inspire series, but it does offer great video and stills quality, some great easy to use auto features and all in a package that you can chuck in a backpack and hike into the hills. 

More than a year after Asus impressed with a flipping camera on its flagship Zenfone 6, the company is back with the Zenfone 7 Pro. The phone's standout feature is a swiveling camera that smoothly flips over the top of the phone to take selfies. It also sports a large uninterrupted display, 5G connectivity, a blazing-fast processor, fast refresh rates and a massive battery. Alongside the 7 Pro, Asus launched a base variant called the Zenfone 7.

With these updated features, Asus bumped up prices significantly from the $499 Zenfone 6 to levels that are tough to justify. The higher-end Zenfone 7 Pro (the phone I received for review) costs approximately $960 (roughly £715 or AU$1,290) when converted from euros, whereas the Zenfone 7 starts at around $840 (about £625 or AU$1,130). Although the Zenfone 7 Pro comes with improved features like Qualcomm's most advanced chipset and a better flip camera, you aren't getting the value for money that made the Zenfone 6 such an excellent purchase. 

The phone comes with some drawbacks too. For example, it's not water resistant and there's no support for wireless charging. Plus the phone can get uncomfortably hot when charging or performing demanding tasks. If you're dead-set on showing off a flip-camera phone to your friends, then I'd recommend going for the more affordable Zenfone 7. The former looks identical to the 7 Pro and serves up most of its core features, but has less storage (128 GB versus 256GB), a different chipset (Snapdragon 865 versus Snapdragon 865 Plus) and no optical image stabilization in the camera. Meanwhile, the Zenfone 6's launch price was $499. If an IP rating is important to you, the OnePlus 8 Pro is a good Android alternative within a similar price bracket. 

Unfortunately, Asus doesn't currently have plans to officially rollout the phone in the US. But the Zenfone 7 and Zenfone 7 Pro are expected to be released in parts of Europe in late September for 699 euros and 799 euros respectively, so they'll be reasonably easy to import. 

Asus doubles down on that flip camera

Since the flip camera influences many parts of the Zenfone 7 Pro's aesthetic, it's difficult to talk about design without first addressing its most distinctive physical feature. The camera unit is composed of three lenses that flip from back to front over the top of the phone (and vice versa) with a click of a button. This allows you to use its higher resolution cameras, which are normally reserved for the back of the phone, as front-facing shooters. Because of this, Asus eliminated the front camera altogether and as a result delivered a completely uninterrupted display, free of any notches or cut-outs that would typically house a lens. 

For the Zenfone 7 phones, Asus upgraded the flip-cameras's motor from the Zenfone 6, to one that it says is smoother, more durable and more versatile due to the addition of a new angle sensor. The company says the flip-cam can endure 200,000 flips, lasting you about five years or twice as long as the Zenfone 6. In the week or so that I've spent with this phone, I've had fun using the flip camera. I think it's a creative, clever and well-thought out solution that actually integrates with useful features. But, despite Asus' claims, I worry the constant emerging and re-emerging of the camera unit may make it prone to more wear and tear. For its part, Asus has added an auto-retract protection feature to its flip camera, which can sense when the handset is in a freefall. I tested this by dropping it on to a bed from a height of approximately four feet and can confirm it works. 

The Zenfone 7 Pro is bulky, but has a great screen

Apart from the avant-garde flip camera setup, the sheer size and weight of the Zenfone 7 Pro was the next thing I noticed about it. It's one of the heaviest phones I've used and I often found myself navigating it with two hands. The phone I was given for review was entirely black except for the back which featured a dark green sheen. Overall, the color scheme was a bit too dark for my taste, but I can see why people would appreciate this finish. (The bundled charger and cable are black too.) On the right side of the handset, there are two buttons, namely, a volume control fingerprint reader that doubles up as a power button, which can be customised. The side fingerprint worked seamlessly and was easy to get accustomed to, but I do prefer an in-display reader. 

The Zenfone 7 Pro features a 6.67-inch AMOLED display with speedy 90Hz refresh rates. Most phones have a 60Hz display, which means the screen refreshes 60 times a second. But it's not as high as the 120Hz screens on the OnePlus 8 Pro and Galaxy S20. With the faster screen, the animations look smoother, while text and images are crisper. The phone runs on Android 10 out of the box and has a customized skin known as Zen UI. It reminds me of stock Android, but overall I found it clean, simple and easy to navigate.

The Zenfone 7 Pro's three cameras

This camera took sharp and vibrant pictures in the sunlight and even in overcast weather conditions. Low light imaging was mostly good too and it did well brightening up some environments, especially when I used Night Mode. At times, however, pictures looked slightly artificially sharpened.

Out of the Zenfone 7 Pro's tri-camera module, it's the telephoto lens that is a new addition. It allows for 3x optical zoom and up to 12x digital zoom. At this level, pictures were blurry and grainy. If you intend on using zoom to capture details of faraway subjects, you won't achieve that with this phone, unfortunately. At 3x optical zoom, photos look crisp in sunny conditions, but tended to look grainy in trickier lighting environments. Overall, this camera definitely wasn't best-in-class, but then again this phone appeals to people who want a flipping camera and not necessarily the best camera.

As for video, there was support for up to 8K video at 30 frames per second with EIS. It makes for massive file sizes and isn't a video feature I expect to use much. But thanks to the flip cam, you have the option of making use of this high-tech feature from the phone's front.

The Zenfone 7 Pro's 5,000-mah battery lasts well 

Asus prides itself on the "unbeatable endurance" of its Zenfone batteries, so I was looking forward to experiencing its seemingly endless battery life and it didn't disappoint. It lasted me nearly 23 hours with what I would describe as moderate usage. Meaning I used my phone for about an hour of Zoom video calls, WhatsApp messaging, reading news on various social media apps and taking some photos. When I went to bed, I muted the phone and didn't switch on airplane mode, which would have preserved battery life even more. Also, when I continuously played an HD video on Airplane mode for battery tests, the phone lasted for more than 15 hours at 50% brightness.

When the battery did finally run out, it managed to hit a 50 percent charge in 30 minutes and get fully revitalized in 100 minutes or so, which is slightly longer than the quoted 93 minutes. Like the Zenfone 6, Asus decided to stick with a massive 5,000-mAh battery for the Zenfone 7 series. Though the capacity didn't increase with the new iteration, it added more battery-care features and a faster 30-watt charger. What really stood out was the degree of customization Asus provided in terms of battery-care features and charging. One new feature is the option to enable always slow charging, which the company says helps preserve battery capacity in the long run. Another example was the upper limit charging feature, which allows you to limit how much you charge your battery, say to 90% instead of the full hundred. Again, Asus says that's because regularly hitting a 100% charge degrades battery capacity over time.

At the heart of the Zenfone 7 Pro is the new Snapdragon 865 Plus processor, which is supposed to be 10% faster than the 865 processor found on most premium Android phones. In my experience, it was extremely snappy and totally capable. Nothing got in its way. Other fancy phones that use this processor include Samsung's pricier Galaxy Note 20, Note 20 Ultra and Oppo's Find X2 and Find X2 Pro. The Zenfone 7 Pro is backed up by 8GB RAM and 256GB of internal storage, and held up extremely well in benchmark tests.

Google's Pixel 6 line is integrating Snapchat directly into the phone, debuting a Quick Tap to Snap feature that makes Snapchat's camera come up by tapping the back of the phone.

The integration is a first for Snapchat, and during Google's Pixel fall event on Tuesday, Snapchat CEO Evan Spiegel said that the app will support several of the Pixel's other enhancements, including live translation in the camera and in chat, the ultrawide-angle lens and exclusive augmented reality lenses. 

The live translation feature will support more than 10 languages, with Snapchat saying the translations will occur in real time.

The announcement comes as part of the reveal of the $599 (£599) Pixel 6 and the $899 (£849) Pixel 6 Pro, in which Google gave a deep dive into the phones, their in-house Tensor chip, the new cameras on the phones and other enhancements coming alongside Android 12.

You might have noticed how moviemakers try to shape your mood with color: the sickly green tinge of the Matrix, the psychedelic purple and blue of Avatar, the miasmic orange of Blade Runner 2049 or the gritty dulled colors of Saving Private Ryan. It's done with a technology called color grading, and Adobe has just built it into its Lightroom photo editing software.

The technology, with roots in analog-era chemistry tweaks in film processing, is arriving in all versions of Lightroom, Adobe announced Tuesday at its free online Max conference for the creative set.

Even if you prefer undoctored photos, plenty of people like the moods possible with Instagram filters. Lightroom's color grading is a more sophisticated step in digital photography -- technology that once was out of the reach of mainstream photographers.

Lightroom color grading relies on three color wheels to control hues in a photo's bright, midrange and dark regions. You can warm up photos by making bright parts more vivid and yellowish, embrace the orange and teal look popular in lots of movies, or just explore lots of moody or wacky color schemes.

The feature helps Lightroom match rivals like Phase One's Capture One Pro that already have high-end color tools. Expect a new market in the cottage industry selling Lightroom presets designed to help wedding and portrait photographers quickly make photos look peppy, nostalgic, bold or solemn.

Unlike some Lightroom updates, color grading works in both of Adobe's Lightroom families -- Lightroom Classic for Windows and MacOS and the newer, cloud-synced Lightroom for Windows, MacOS, iOS, iPadOS, Android, Chrome OS and the web.

Adobe is bringing several other features to its Lightroom versions:

• A best photo option using cloud-based AI suggests winning shots based on its assessment of parameters like exposure, focus and whether a subject's eyes are open. It works on Lightroom for iOS, iPadOS, Android and the web. Adobe is considering the best photo feature for Classic, which would use the laptop's own processing power instead of Adobe's cloud-based AI. "The priorities for Lightroom Classic are focused on speed, stability, and tethering," said Josh Haftel, director of product management for Lightroom.
• The ability to follow particular photographers who contribute Lightroom editing tutorials. This works on iOS, iPadOS, Android and Chrome OS. Lightroom will suggest others to follow based on your Lightroom activity, too.
• GPU acceleration for faster changes applied with brush and gradient tools on all Windows and Mac versions.
• Updating the versions feature, Lightroom for Windows, Mac, Web, iOS, iPadOS, Android and Chrome OS now automatically detects significant changes and saves them so you can undo changes or compare different photos.
• In Lightroom Classic, the ability to zoom to whatever level you want instead of just some preset, fixed options.

Two Lightroom families

It can be awkward for photographers that there are two separate families of Lightroom -- the newer Lightroom, with a photo catalog anchored in the cloud and synchronized across many devices, and the older Lightroom Classic, with a photo catalog stored on a PC's hard drive and more limited sync abilities. Lightroom Classic offers several advanced features Lightroom doesn't, and though the two versions can partially work in harmony, features like photo keywords don't synchronize.

Adobe doesn't plan to unify the two Lightroom versions into one.

"Lightroom Desktop and Lightroom Classic are two separate applications and there's no intention to merge these together," the company said in a statement.

The USS Enterprise is back and boldly returning to its original-series roots in Star Trek: Strange New Worlds. Beaming down to planets! Weird illnesses! Submarines in space! Shirts coming off!

Strange New Worlds is streaming now on Paramount Plus, with episode 1 released May 5 and new installments beaming down every Thursday. Right from the start, it's a rollicking return to the traditional Trek that longtime fans may've missed in the recent wave of mold-breaking Star Trek shows like Discovery, Lower Decks, Prodigy and Picard. From its stirring new take on the memorable Star Trek: The Original Series theme tune, to chunky bridge consoles, a square-jawed captain and weekly episodic adventures, the series is a playfully retro romp.

That said, Strange New Worlds takes the traditional Trek formula and stirs in more-modern elements, like deeper character backstories and overarching storylines. But that's far looser than in Discovery and Picard, which were powered almost entirely by ongoing plotlines.

The series begins with Captain Christopher Pike hiding out in the snows of Montana after his misadventures in Star Trek: Discovery. You don't need to have kept up with Discovery: All you need to know is he's haunted by visions of his own death and it's made him sprout a massive beard. Adventure quickly intrudes on Pike's introspection, however, as a Starfleet shuttle sweeps in and whisks him back to the Enterprise on a rescue mission to save his trusty first officer.

And then it's off to the races. In the first five episodes made available to press, the Starship Enterprise has a new adventure each week, doing classic Trek stuff like investigating comets and negotiating treaties. Allegories are unsubtle. Lessons are learned in personal logs. And the production design also sidesteps one of my personal bugbears about Discovery, that it was meant to be a prequel yet looked more technologically advanced than any of the Trek that supposedly came after. Strange New Worlds tempers this with its satisfyingly chunky starship aesthetic, all fire engine red surfaces and physical control consoles. 

Following the bold but somewhat divisive departure from the Trek formula in Discovery and Picard, it's tempting to see Strange New Worlds as an olive branch to disgruntled fans. Within minutes the show mentions Bob April, the USS Archer, Lieutenant Kirk and various other bits of continuity which will make a Trekker's pointy ears perk up. Cleverly, though, some of these references offer a bait-and-switch to keep you on your toes.

While there are several new faces, the show takes its cue from the movie reboots to bring us new takes on classic characters like Nurse Chapel and Cadet Uhura, led by Captain Pike and Number One (who appeared in the very first 1960s pilot episode before being replaced by the crew we know and love). And the introduction of troubled young officer La'an Noonien-Singh is an inspired setup for future drama. I'm particularly intrigued by a teasing glimpse of an original series enemy given a heightened air of menace and fear.

At the heart of the show is Anson Mount's Captain Pike. Sort of a new character but also sort of an old one, Pike suffers from being a little too similar to Captain Kirk. Dispensing down-home, Western-inflected wisdom from the captain's chair, Pike is basically Kirk with gray streaks. His country retreat even looks like Kirk's dream home in Generations. But the square-jawed yet twinkling Mount is an immensely charming leader, and generously shares the spotlight with a crew of officers who are more rounded than previous bridge crews.

Celia Rose Gooding is particularly endearing as young Cadet Uhura, while Christina Chong gets the meatiest drama as La'an. For my money, Ethan Peck isn't as Spock-y as the smoldering Zachary Quinto in the movies, but his dynamic with the rest of the crew is fun to watch. Rebecca Romijn has a bit of a thankless task playing a stern first officer who isn't Spock, but the show gives her enough space and attention to slowly develop a character of her own.

While Strange New Worlds definitely evokes Star Trek: The Original Series, that doesn't mean it's staid or overly reverent. It's playful, zingy stuff, driven by a diverse cast having fun running around in their sleek Starfleet uniforms. When I say the series takes its cue from the movie reboot (starring Chris Pine as Captain Kirk, Zachary Quinto as Spock and Zoe Saldana as Uhura), I mean that these are younger versions of the familiar characters. Younger, and sexier. Spock has his shirt off in the first 10 minutes, and is quickly tractor-beamed toward a love triangle with Chapel's adorkable flirt, sparkily played by Jess Bush.

And like the movie reboots and recent TV shows, the overall tone is playful and quippy. These Starfleet officers somehow find time for Joss Whedon-esque banter and soul-baring emotional confessions even at life-and-death moments. This keeps things lively, though your mileage may vary with a relentless barrage of lines like, "We definitely pissed them off!" while they're meant to be busy dodging photon torpedoes. Also, you may roll your eyes at each successively more melodramatic revelation of overwrought tragic backstory for seemingly everyone on the ship.

Still, Strange New Worlds is the Paramount Plus Trek show that finally relaxes and embraces the classic Trek format, while still feeling fresh and modern. It reminded me of the 2005 Doctor Who revival: Clearly made with love by fans of the original series, it jazzes up the theme tune, looks deeper into the emotional dynamics between characters and whisks you off your feet with fast-paced action. If that bugs you, well, go back to your starbase and your TOS VHS, Admiral Fun-Sponge. 

It remains to be seen how this new series will develop its ongoing plot threads through its episodic format. But at first glance, Star Trek: Strange New Worlds is enjoyable, irreverent hokum. Sure, beam me up, why not.
